Day 3

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

1) Queen's Gambit Podfic by [personal profile] reena_jenkins - Star Wars prequels - final length is something like over 50 hours

Summary: Civil war threatens the galaxy. Hundreds of star systems have declared their intentions to leave the Republic and form a Confederacy of Independent Systems.

In the hopes of securing a quick peace, the Jedi Council has dispatched two Jedi to capture or kill the leaders of the separatist movement, Queen Amidala of Naboo and her lover, the former Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Into this period of conflict have come four refugees from another universe, fleeing a devastating massacre triggered by the death of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, secretly the Sith lord Darth Sidious, at the hands of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker…

[personal profile] reena_jenkins is AMAZING! I was a beta for this, so I listened week-to-week and loved every minute of it. Now, the podfic is complete and it is awesome! [personal profile] reena_jenkins does an incredible job with the full cast of characters (seriously, SO many characters), including two versions of the same characters (Padme, Anakin, and Obi-Wan). There are great, but subtle, special effects, and on point musical choices - [personal profile] reena_jenkins is incredibly creative. The performance comes across as effortlessly consistent and it is full of intense, emotional character performances.

2) Nebulae Vid by [profile] bessybo - Hidden Figures

Summary: neb·u·la (neb'yə lə), n., pl. -lae, a cloud in outer space, visible against the night sky as a dark silhouette against other luminous matter.

A beautiful vid that uses a poem, which is such a beautiful performance, music, and film. The combination is haunting and incredibly emotionally poignant.

3) With Great Power, Something Something Fic by [archiveofourown.org profile] Sharksdontsleep - Spider-man: Homecoming

Summary: Hey Liz,
Apparently, I'm the captain of the Decathlon team. Or something. I was just wondering if you had any quizzes or guides that I could use.
Thanks,
MJ

Beautiful story from MJ's perspective. There is friendship, romance, and action! Her relationship with Peter is an important part of the story, but so is her friendship with Liz, I love that Liz wasn't just swept away. Such a delightful story!

Day 9

In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) but you ended up loving. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I don't really have anything exactly applicable here, so I'm stretching the definition a little.

3 podfics from fandoms I don't read in, but listened to because the reader is so awesome:

1) One More Syllable read by [archiveofourown.org profile] lunate8 - James Bond - James Bond/M - M centric

Simply awesome! The M centric podfic I didn't know I wanted :D So much depth!

2) Paparazzo & Tabloid read by [archiveofourown.org profile] opalsong - Iron Man/Spider-Man

This podfic sells the pairing really well, I enjoyed it greatly! It's so much fun and [archiveofourown.org profile] opalsong does such amazing voices.

3) Design read by [archiveofourown.org profile] rhea and illutu (sp?) - Serenity/USS Enterprise

Something I never would have thought to try, but it's a tiny and lovely podfic.

Day Six

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Northern Lights by Philip Pullman, AKA The Golden Compass (for the Americans among us). The story of Lyra and her adventures/trials had a profound effect on me as a child. It was read to me when I was on the cusp of being able to read it for myself, but I still loved being read to by my parents. I subsequently read it to my younger cousins when I was on holiday that year (or possibly a few years later, quick googling is telling me that this book came out when I was 5/6) and I have since, either read it or listened to the audiobook (also amazing) once a year since then.

This book has definitely, significantly marked the way I think about literature. It remains one of my favourite books of all time.

I also love the two sequels, but neither left the same mark on my soul. I love the Subtle Knife (the second book), and the male protagonist, Will, is one of my favourites ever, but the series is no longer Lyra's own journey after book 1. Also, simply thinking about the ending of Amber Spyglass can make me cry.

I am SUPER late with the snowflake challenge, but I have a TINY window in-between finishing my last long essay (\o/) and starting my next course. I seem to find day one difficult, because self-reccing is so difficult!! It seems to go against my nature, or maybe more accurately, what I feel is that I'm going against social conventions, but I did it \o/

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

[personal profile] anna_unfolding created this amazingly beautiful piece of not!podfic Go Back to the Tape - Hockey RPF/Panic! at the Disco - Tazer/Kaner :D [personal profile] anna_unfolding's story telling is SO GOOD! I love how the oral not!fic style makes me feel like I am being told a story in real time. There are 'umms' and 'likes' and pauses and it feels authentic and real in a way polished podfic just doesn't achieve in the same way. Also, the crossover element was so much fun!

[personal profile] podcath wrote this amazing piece of mete Podfic = Reading + ..., a truly great and interesting piece about podfics and how podficcers can use different techniques to create something that can be truly remarkable. The detail, with multimedia examples is SO great. [personal profile] podcath's meta is always well written, well researched and definitely worth a read.

Bedtime Stories is a podfic by [personal profile] analise010 - X Men - Logan/Rogue - 9 min.
This is a dark podfic, where Logan tells Rogue 'bedtime stories' about violent ways he/she could kill their enemies. The narration is soft, which creates a calm, comforting tone. However, this contributes to the dark atmosphere, since it juxtaposes so well with the subject matter. [personal profile] analise010's Rogue voice holds just the right amount of vulnerability and strength, and the balance between the characters is excellent.
