He feels a tinge of sadness when Canada wins, but he guesses he just feels bad. Ovechkin’s not the only one crying, and Sid isn’t so unfeeling he doesn’t have some sympathy for how it must suck to lose. He also gets a headache when he flies back home, but he’s just really overtired is all.

He doesn’t think anything of it.

I love this story a lot, it gave me ALL THE FEELINGS in the universe! Hyperbole to the MAX! It is told through the dual pov of Geno and Sid, a narrative style I enjoy. I love the way thefourthvine subverts established ideas and tropes (see the other amazing story The Work of Wings, which I also rec highly). The story interrogates these tropes from different angles, and the two perspectives create an interesting picture for the reader. Sidney: who feels too much, to his detriment. Geno: who can never be a part of a 'soulbond', but longs for a connection.

The world building is excellent and I would love to read a million words of different stories set in this universe. I liked the cast of interesting side characters (even though Russian names are a pain to pronounce), and I really liked the Geno/Ovechkin and thought it was interesting and integral to Geno's development and the story.

It is not always a happy story, there is a melancholy tone with pining and pain and the road is hard. The characters have to work for their happy ending. This story made me think hard about the tropes I love and why I love them. Did I want the story to follow my wish fulfillment ideas? Or carry down this interesting path, but with an uncertain foundation? The story built beautifully and ultimately I cannot think of a more satisfying resolution. A incredible piece of writing and a great reading journey.

... and yes this may mean that I have almost finished podficcing it (blanket permission to podfic is awesome).
