Bedtime Comfort Pods can be hard to define, but for me they are things I listen to when I'm expecting to be able to fall asleep after listening. For this they should be under an hour (if they are longer I may deliberately stay up longer to finish), not be too distressing and I have to have listened to them before (if I am extremely sleepy I may need to not finish them). Ideally they should also leave me feeling happy and soft.

( RECS! )

Feel free to add your own comfort recs in the comments.

comments

#BestPesto

Before we go I would like to stress that I often make this with whatever amounts of basil or pistachios I have and routinely mess with the ratios. Below are the measures I used when I made the pesto today.

Ingredients:
This makes enough for 4/5 people to have a pasta with pesto meal.
75g bunch of Basil - I had 42g once I had picked all the leaves
100g pistachios
Juice and zest of one lemon - I had 75g of juice (which may be too much lemon for some)
25g parmesan cheese (omit for the vegan version)
100ml olive oil
2 cloves of garlic
Pinch of salt to taste

1) I used a pestle and mortar because I like to take my aggression out and I like the rough texture, but you can use a blender no problem. Pound/blend the picked basil leaves and pistachios. If you're having problems with the blender add the olive oil slowly while you blend.
2) Add the lemon zest and half the juice. Taste. If you like the lemon flavour move on, otherwise add the rest of the juice.
3) Crush the garlic and grate the cheese and add to the mixture.
4) Add the olive oil and salt.
5) Taste.
6) Add more oil/cheese/salt for taste and/or texture.

comments

Thank you! You are amazing! I love fandom and podfic, and I especially love podficcers. It is important to me that you love the story you are performing. However, if you would appreciate some details about my preferences, they are below.

Star Wars
I have a lot of Star Wars feelings - just no Kylo Ren or Hux. I really love time travel and fix-its. I have a particular love for:
Prequels: Padme Amidala & Obi-Wan Kenobi are my favs and fic focusing on either/both of them would be super. I also have great affection for the OT3 Padme/Obi-Wan/Anakin.
The Clone Wars: See above, but also, Clones! Ahsoka Tano! Satine Kryze!
Rogue One: TEAM FEELS! Everyone Lives!AU. Baze/Chirrut, Jyn/Cassian, and Jyn/Cassian/Bodhi. I'm also really into stories where the Rogue One characters interact with the Original Trilogy.
Sequel Trilogy: Finn/Rey/Poe is where my heart lies, but any combo of these three works for me.
Original Trilogy: My heart for Leia fic!

Rivers of London
I love Peter, anything focusing on him will work for me. Peter/Nightingale, Peter/Beverly, and Peter/Beverly/Nightingale are all awesome options.

Les Mis
Enjolras/Grantaire and Eponine/Cosette are my favs. I am so here for ALL the pining, but also, SOCIAL JUSTICE!

Black Panther:
T'Challa! Erik! Nakia! M'Baku! I am especially here for T'Challa ships. I love everyone so much! I'd prefer nothing focusing on Everett Ross.

Leverage
Parker/Hardison/Eliot!

DCU
Batfamily (robins and batgirls - I have lots of feelings about Jason/Dick, Jason/Tim, Jason/Roy, Tim/Kon, Stephanie/Cass)
Young Justice (cartoon - Aqualad and Nightwing are my favs)
Birds of prey (comics - I adore the OT3 of Barbara/Dinah/Helena).

Pride and Prejudice
Elizabeth Bennet for the win! I love everything Elizabeth/Darcy, but I'm also interested in the other sisters and them getting their happy endings.

Lizzie Bennet Diaries
Lydia/Gigi!!!!!! <3

Also: Black Sails, Wynonna Earp, All for the game, Young Avengers, Kings, The Goblin Emporer, Watchmaker of Filigree Street, Captive Prince, Disney Princesses, Carmilla (webseries), Lost Girl, The Losers, Pitch Perfect, Xena, Buffy, The Hunger Games, Code Name Verity, The Queen's Thief, Killjoys (TV), Haven, Sorcerer to the Crown, Jane Austen novels, and North and South.

Any of these fandoms would be awesome! However, if there's a long femslash fic you've been dying to record in a different fandom, that would be 100% fine with me.

I love characters falling in love, making mistakes, and getting though trouble together. A happy ending is an absolute must, but I enjoy complications and angst along the way. I prefer shippy fic over gen, and really just love revelling in people having feelings.

Things I love: friends-to-lovers, fake dating, loyalty, secret identities, soulbonding, found families, team feels, women being awesome, time travel, poly relationships, road trips, writing on the skin, emotional intelligence, rare pairs, trope inversion/subversion, and relationship/kink negotiation.

Personal do-not-wants: non-con, permanent character death, unhappy endings, and infidelity.

Yellow Light (things I only like under specific circumstances, so unless you know 100% for sure I like the fic, I'd steer clear): zombie fic, post-apocalyptic fic, pregnancy, the themes of insanity or mental institutions, and institutional unequal power dynamics (where the power imbalance is innate and un-negotiated, e.g. teachers, religious officials, doctors, psychiatrists, prostitution).

My pinboard is here! Anything I have pinned is fair game. Also, ask pi for help if you need it.

<3

comments

Hundreds of star systems have declared their intentions to leave the Republic and form a Confederacy of Independent Systems.

In the hopes of securing a quick peace, the Jedi Council has dispatched two Jedi to capture or kill the leaders of the separatist movement, Queen Amidala of Naboo and her lover, the former Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Into this period of conflict have come four refugees from another universe, fleeing a devastating massacre triggered by the death of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, secretly the Sith lord Darth Sidious, at the hands of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker…

reena_jenkins is AMAZING! I was a beta for this, so I listened week-to-week and loved every minute of it. Now, the podfic is complete and it is awesome! reena_jenkins does an incredible job with the full cast of characters (seriously, SO many characters), including two versions of the same characters (Padme, Anakin, and Obi-Wan). There are great, but subtle, special effects, and on point musical choices - reena_jenkins is incredibly creative. The performance comes across as effortlessly consistent and it is full of intense, emotional character performances.

2) Nebulae Vid by bessybo - Hidden Figures

Summary: neb·u·la (neb'yə lə), n., pl. -lae, a cloud in outer space, visible against the night sky as a dark silhouette against other luminous matter.

A beautiful vid that uses a poem, which is such a beautiful performance, music, and film. The combination is haunting and incredibly emotionally poignant.

3) With Great Power, Something Something Fic by Sharksdontsleep - Spider-man: Homecoming

Summary: Hey Liz,
Apparently, I'm the captain of the Decathlon team. Or something. I was just wondering if you had any quizzes or guides that I could use.
Thanks,
MJ

Beautiful story from MJ's perspective. There is friendship, romance, and action! Her relationship with Peter is an important part of the story, but so is her friendship with Liz, I love that Liz wasn't just swept away. Such a delightful story!

comments

Salted Caramel Tiramisu

For the Salted Caramel
80ml double cream
1 tsp salt
100g caster sugar
1 tbsp golden syrup
2 tbsp water
(I always make two or three times this amount and keep it in the fridge)

1) Heat the caster sugar, golden syrup, and water over a medium boil for 10 minutes, watch carefully in case it begins to turn too dark and burn. The sugar should turn a light golden colour and bubble happily
2) Heat the cream and salt until just boiled.
3) Take the sugar mixture off the boil.
4) Add the cream to the sugar mixture slowly and carefully, the mixture will dramatically increase in size and then calm down again.
5) Leave to cool completely.

For the Tiramisu
1 packet of Savoiardi biscuits (in a pinch you can use trifle sponges)
200ml coffee (I used fresh coffee, but you can use instant)
3 tbsp alcohol (I used whisky, but other alternatives could be white rum, brandy, or amaretto)
4 eggs (separated)
4 tbsp caster sugar
300ml double cream
500ml mascarpone
Bowl (I used a large glass bowl approx 11 inches across)

1) Mix the coffee and alcohol and set to one side.
2) Whip the cream.
3) Whisk the egg yolks, sugar and mascarpone together.
4) Fold the cream into the egg yolk mixture.
5) Whisk the egg whites until stiff, fold in the cream mixture. Taste and add more sugar if necessary.
6) To assemble the Tiramisu dip the biscuits in the coffee mixture and line the base of the bowl (I recommend submerging the biscuits completely and removing quickly). Then add a layer of the cream mixture. Then add a layer of salted caramel. Repeat the 3 layers until you fill the bowl, finishing with the cream layer. You can swirl more caramel sauce here for decoration or grate some dark chocolate.
7) Chill for at least an hour before eating.
8) Serve with MORE salted caramel.

comments

Hi! So, I have been in Japan for a WHOLE month! It was amazing but very exhausting. I didn't read or listen to things anywhere near as much as I thought I would, mostly because any free moment of time was spent flat out sleeping. However, there were a few things I did read/listen to that I would like to share.

Podcast
The Twenty Percent True Podcast by Carolyn Rahaman.

Season 1 is called 'Modern Monsters' and is complete. These are essentially short stories, read by the author, about 'monsters' like mermaids, vampires, gargoyles, etc, and the modern world. They are all intensely imaginative and beautifully drawn. Some are upsetting (the author warns at the beginning of the episode), some are funny, and some are deeply thought prevoking, and all are impeccably written. My favourite is The Roommate about a tired grad student meeting a Vampire for a roommate interview. I would read 1000000000K about these two and their roommate shenanigans (*cough* romance *cough*).

Podfic
Wizarding by consent by Lazulus written by sixthlight - Rivers of London - Peter Grant/Thomas Nightingale - 5 hours 45 minutes

Fifteen years after a headless body was discovered in Covent Garden, Thomas Nightingale is still the last wizard in Britain, and Peter Grant, the newly appointed Commander for Community Engagement in the Metropolitan Police Service, has just learned the truth about the existence of the Folly.

He has one or two questions.

This podfic is super awesome. The story completely spins the established dynamics from the books, and this gives the podfic an opportunity to do such fun things with the characters voices. Nightingale is so long suffering and hilarious, but his affection still shines through. The way he calls Peter 'Commander' is nominally a sign of respect, but within the narration, it highlights it as a slightly inside joke and an insult. I love how the listener gets to see a little bit of his pettiness. Nightingale is outside his comfort zone and doesn't have the comforting veil of authority he has in the books to cover up how upsetting he finds change. Lazulus does a great job showing the slow build of the relationship and how Nightingale changes over time. Peter, even as a 40-ish police Commander, is still an enthusiastic magic/science puppy, I love how the tone of the dialogue can switch so effectively between Peter being serious and him being adorkable.

The side characters are also done particularly well. Tyburn is so posh and dramatic, Abigail is so determined, and Beverly is such a delight.

You will, obviously, get more of out of this podfic if you know the source material. HOWEVER, because it is a complete canon divergent AU from the very beginning (as in, what if they met 15years later than in canon), you can definitely enjoy this podfic without canon knowledge.

Fic
With Great Power, Something Something by Sharksdontsleep - Spider-Man: Homecoming - Michelle Jones/Peter Parker - 15978 words

Hey Liz,
Apparently, I'm the captain of the Decathlon team. Or something. I was just wondering if you had any quizzes or guides that I could use.
Thanks,
MJ

MJ is soooo great! She has to deal with being team captain, spider-man drama, and relationships! Life is hard. I really love that her connection with Liz is used as a framework for the story, I'm glad Liz wasn't just swept away. The ensemble cast is adorable too.

Book
Bloodline by Claudia Gray is a Leia centric Star Wars novel, set about 40yrs after the end of Return of the Jedi and, I think, 6yrs before The Force Awakens (for context, Leia is a senator, and Ben is still off training with Luke). It is a tense, political thriller full of action and intrigue, but also hits great emotional notes. It does a great job bridging the original trilogy with the new, especially with regards to how the political landscape changed, and how the First Order came to be. I occasionally found a few too many parallels with some current events.

Leia is done so well, she is super competent, she kicks ass and takes names, but the novel also allows a great insight into her emotional landscape. Despite being a highly plotted and action packed novel, the story still touches on her relationships: with Han, her son, Luke; but also engages with her grief over her adoptive father, Bail Organa, and her home planet of Alderaan. I personally loved how the novel dealt with her inability to truly reconcile with the idea of Darth Vader as her biological father, and how she was unable to make the distinction Luke (and the movies) make between Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader.

Sometimes the hindesight I had from TFA made reading it painful, because I knew what must be coming, the book plays with that knowledge in interesting ways. I had Leia feelings ALL over the place. This is, so far, the only Star Wars novel I've read and I highly recommend it if you have any strong feelings about Leia.

comments

Thank you! You are amazing! I love fandom and podfic, and I especially love podficcers. It is important to me that you love the story you are performing. However, if you would appreciate some details about my preferences, they are below.

Star Wars!
I have a lot of Star Wars feelings - just no Kylo Ren or Hux. I really love time travel and fix-its. I have particular love for:

Les Mis - Enjolras/Grantaire and Eponine/Cosette are my favs. I am so here for ALL the pining, but also, SOCIAL JUSTICE!

Black Sails - Flint is the best (*worst*) and he makes my heart hurt, so fic where he gets to be happy is awesome (all pairings with Flint seem to work for me). I'm also really interested in Anne/Max, and how their relationship with Jack works/could work.

Leverage - Parker/Hardison/Eliot!

Jessica Jones (Netflix) - Jessica/Trish. I'm also happy with Jessica/Luke, and I liked the Matt&Jessica dynamic from The Defenders.

DCU - bat-family (robins and batgirls), young justice (cartoon - Aqualad and Nightwing are my favs), birds of prey (comics), and Batwoman.

Also: Wonder Woman, Yuri! on Ice, All for the game, Young Avengers, Kings, The Goblin Emporer, Watchmaker of Filigree Street, Captive Prince, Society of Gentlemen, Think of England, Six of Crows, Disney Princesses, Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Carmilla (webseries), Lost Girl, Pitch Perfect, Xena, Buffy, The Hunger Games, Code Name Verity, The Queen's Thief, Killjoys (TV), Haven, Sorcerer to the Crown, Tamora Pierce novels, Legend of Korra, Jane Austen novels, and North and South.

Any of these fandoms would be awesome! However, if there's a long femslash fic you've been dying to record in a different fandom, that would be 100% fine with me.

I love characters falling in love, making mistakes, and getting though trouble together. A happy ending is an absolute must, but I don't mind if there are complications and angst along the way.

Things I love: friends-to-lovers, fake dating, loyalty, supernatural aus, soulbonding, found families, team feels, women being awesome, time travel, poly relationships, road trips, writing on the skin, emotional intelligence, rare pairs, trope inversion/subversion, and relationship/kink negotiation.

Personal do-not-wants: non-con, permanent character death, unhappy endings, and infidelity.

Yellow Light (things I only like under specific circumstances, so unless you know 100% for sure I like the fic, I'd steer clear): zombie fic, post-apocalyptic fic, pregnancy, and the themes of insanity or mental institutions, institutional unequal power dynamics (where the power imbalance is innate and un-negotiated, e.g. teachers, religious officials, doctors, psychiatrists, prostitution).

My pinboard is here! Also, ask pi for help if you need it.

<3

comments
